Hong Kong and Shanghai - a tale of two cities
These two ultra-modern cities make a great combination for a short trip to the Far East. Despite being home to some of the finest 21st century architecture, there are still plenty of opportunities to experience the traditional Chinese way of life. In Hong Kong, you can catch a ferry to the outlying islands of Lamma or Cheung Chau. Here you can take a stroll through traditional villages followed by a delicious, inexpensive seafood lunch overlooking the fishing harbour. In Shanghai you can view one of the world's most spectacular cities whilst dining on the 87th floor of the Grand Hyatt Hotel and follow this with a cocktail or two in one of the stylish bars housed in one of the fine 1920's buildings on the Bund. The next day you could visit one of the old canal villages on the outskirts of the city or make a day trip to the beautiful city of Suzhou, only 60 minutes away by train. There are very reasonable airfares into one city and out of the other with Qatar Airlines (via Doha) and for the adventurous there is a very good ferry service between the two. |

Vietnam
As a destination Vietnam has come of age with something for all budgets and interests. Hotel choices range from 5 star international-standard hotels to intimate, boutique hotels or even home stays with the hill tribes or in the Mekong Delta and overnights on traditional junks. The selection of restaurants is almost bewildering with tiny venues offering just delicious noodle soup right through to gourmet Vietnamese cuisine. For variety you could try French, Italian, Russian, Indian, Thai or Spanish.
Culture lovers head for the French colonial architecture and narrow streets of the Old Quarter in Hanoi, the imperial city of Hue and the old trading port of Hoi An, and those more interested in the 20th century can discover Saigon and Danang. The northwest of the country, reached by overnight train from Hanoi, is the place to meet hill tribes with many of them living and dressing in colourful traditional dress, as they have done for centuries. Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and to sail through the hundreds of limestone islets, far from the hustle and bustle, is a very special experience. Vietnam's coastline is only just seeing some development and small resorts can be found on the white-sand beaches of Phan Thiet, Hoi An and the island of Phu Quoc. Escapists can go barefoot on Whale Island off Nha Trang.
We can arrange for you to join a small group tour to Vietnam or we can put together a tailor-made itinerary as well as combining it with Cambodia, Laos or Thailand. Please call us to discuss your Vietnam holiday ideas on 0117 929 4123. |

Mocambique
After years of isolation, travellers have rediscovered Mozambique, with its 2500 kilometres of Indian Ocean coastline, unspoilt tropical beaches fringed with coconut palms and endless coral reefs. Small lodges on virtually uninhabited islands make Mozambique an ideal honeymoon or post-safari beach destination. We have been sending Marco Polo clients to the Bazaruto Archipelago for many years, but the remote Quirimbas Archipelago, in the far north, is the choice of eco-tourists, divers and adventurous souls in search of unspoilt places. Costs range from £2982 per person for a 10-day luxury fly-in island escape to the Bazaruto Archipelago or £3326 to the Quirimbas Archipelago. We also have a 17-day small group tour including a safari in the Kruger National Park and a 2-night dhow trip from £2199 including flights from London. Call us for a quote on your island escape on 0117 929 4123. |

Turkey There is no better time to visit Turkey, which is outside the Euro zone, as it really does represent fantastic value for money. To get away from the crowds why not head south to the charming coastal towns of Kalkan and Kas. They make an ideal base to explore the Lycian Coast and both have picturesque harbours where you can mingle with the locals and watch the fishing boats return from sea. Why not try scuba diving, paragliding or kayaking, test your bargaining skills in a market or explore the sunken city of Kekova. Prices start from as little as £525 staying in a delightful 4* hotel for two weeks on half board basis. We also offer a wide choice of small group tours that offer an opportunity to explore more of this fascinating country, from £639 for 8 days including flights. If culture is your thing you could go on a painting holiday where you can relax while you paint the wonderful scenery around you with a tutor to help improve your skills. Several tour operators now offer the opportunity for clients to 'give something back' by spending a few days as a volunteer working on community or conservation projects. The whole experience is made even more worthwhile as volunteers stay with a local family, the best way to interact and to learn about life in your chosen destination.
